EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us back to a tumultuous battle scene in 16th century Italy. In this engraving by Domenico Campagnola, we witness a group of naked men engaged in fierce combat amidst a dense wooded landscape. Mounted on horseback and accompanied by their loyal canine companion, these warriors display both strength and vulnerability as they clash with one another. The composition is masterfully executed, showcasing Campagnola's skillful hand in capturing the intensity of the moment. The lower left corner of the print features an intricate depiction of a dog, adding an intriguing element to the overall narrative. Dating back to 1517, this artwork is believed to be inspired by a design created by none other than Titian himself. It is thought that Titian may have drawn inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's preparatory drawings for his renowned Battle of Anghiari fresco. Commissioned for display at the Doge Palace in Venice in 1513, this piece reflects both Titian's artistic vision and his close association with Venetian nobility during that time period. As we admire this remarkable print, we are reminded not only of its historical significance but also of the enduring power art holds over centuries.
