EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Crypt of the Madonna in the Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter, located on the Via Labicana in Rome, Italy. The image was captured in 1928 but showcases a remarkable architectural feature from the 3rd century A. D. The crypt's ceiling is adorned with intricate artwork depicting various scenes. At its center, we see a depiction of the Good Shepherd surrounded by four scenes from the life of Jonah. Additionally, there are four figures shown praying and four ornamental heads adding to the overall decorative appeal. Moving towards the front wall, we encounter two significant depictions - Noah and Miracle of the Source. These biblical narratives add depth to this ancient burial site. Above them, on an archway, we witness another powerful scene: Resurrection of Lazarus alongside Miracle of Loaves with departed individuals engaged in prayer. Finally, our gaze lands upon a semicircular picture showcasing Homage of two Magi - an iconic moment from Christian tradition. The lithograph itself is taken from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from Earliest Times to Middle XIXth Century" with explanatory text provided by Helmuth Bossert. This piece serves as both a historical artifact and an artistic masterpiece that allows us to appreciate not only ancient Roman architecture but also their rich cultural heritage preserved within these catacombs for centuries.
