EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th-18th century carved wood sculpture depicts Buddha Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. The statue originated from Sri Lanka, a country rich in Buddhist heritage and cultural traditions. The intricately detailed carving showcases Buddha in a meditative posture, with a serene expression on his face and his right hand resting in his lap in the gesture of teaching. The statue is adorned with vibrant colors and paint, enhancing the intricacies of the woodcarving. Buddha Shakyamuni, also known as Gautama Buddha, lived in ancient India around the 5th century BCE. He is believed to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India, and went on to teach the path to end suffering and achieve Nirvana. His teachings, collectively known as the Dharma, form the foundation of Buddhism. This sculpture is an excellent example of the artistic traditions of South Asia during the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the woodcarver who created it, as well as the enduring influence of Buddhism in the region. The statue is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and educate visitors about the rich cultural heritage of Asia.
