Cutty Sark
circa 1890: The nineteenth century tea clipper Cutty Sark. The ship, built at Scott and Lintons Dumbarton shipyards in 1869, was designed to sail to China for tea but when the Suez Canal was opened the route was more suited to steamships so the Cutty Sark was modified for use in the Australian wool trade. She was bought by Captain Wilfred Harry Dowman in the 1920s, who remembered her outracing a steamer in 1894, and restored to her original form. The Cutty Sark can now be seen in dry dock at Greenwich. (Photo by Rischgitz/Getty Images)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Cutty Sark, a renowned tea clipper from the nineteenth century. Built in 1869 at Scott and Lintons Dumbarton shipyards, this vessel was initially designed for sailing to China to transport tea. However, with the opening of the Suez Canal, steamships became more suitable for this route. Consequently, the Cutty Sark underwent modifications and found its new purpose in the Australian wool trade. Intriguingly, it was Captain Wilfred Harry Dowman who acquired this historic ship in the 1920s and embarked on a mission to restore her original form. His motivation stemmed from witnessing her remarkable speed as she outpaced a steamer back in 1894. With meticulous care and dedication, Captain Dowman successfully brought back the glory of this iconic sailing ship. Today, visitors can marvel at the grandeur of Cutty Sark as she gracefully rests within a dry dock at Greenwich. This snapshot captures her timeless beauty against a backdrop of serene waters—a testament to human ingenuity and maritime history. With its rich historical significance and stunning visual appeal, this print serves as an exquisite addition to any fine art collection or nautical enthusiast's display.
