After a debilitating series of strokes from 1888, several paintings remained unfinished in his studio, sketched in with the brush in the manner of late Rubens. His studio assistant and amanuensis, Catherine Eggar, to whom he left £ 10, 000 in his will, finished this one, labelling it so on the back. She also exhibited as an artist in her own right, both under her maiden name of Eggar and her married name of Banks, and wrote a biographical note about Gilbert prefacing the posthumous exhibition of his work that she largely organised.

Ploughing in Stormy Weather, 1853
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting by John Gilbert and his studio. This self-taught painter, renowned for his illustrative work, also delved into the realm of moody landscapes influenced by Constable. Despite suffering from debilitating strokes later in life, Gilbert left behind several unfinished paintings in his studio. In this particular piece, we witness the culmination of Gilbert's vision brought to life through the skillful hands of Catherine Eggar, his dedicated studio assistant and amanuensis. After inheriting £10,000 from Gilbert's will, Eggar took it upon herself to complete this artwork with utmost care and precision. The stormy weather depicted in the painting adds an air of drama and intensity to the scene. The dark clouds loom overhead as a lone plowman battles against nature's fury. The artist's brushwork captures every detail with remarkable finesse. Eggar not only finished this masterpiece but also made her mark as an artist under both her maiden name of Eggar and her married name of Banks. She went on to organize a posthumous exhibition showcasing Gilbert's work while providing a biographical note about him. This print allows us to appreciate the collaborative effort between two talented individuals who shared a passion for artistry. It serves as a testament to their dedication and commitment even amidst personal challenges faced by both artists involved.
