EDITORS COMMENTS
The litho print titled "Henry, Prince of Wales before Judge Gascoigne" captures a significant moment in English history. In this scene, Henry, the son of King Henry IV and later known as Henry V, stands before Chief Justice Sir William Gascoigne during the 15th century. According to historical accounts, one of Prince Henry's unruly companions had been sentenced by Judge Gascoigne. Enraged by the decision, the prince insulted the judge. However, instead of retaliating or showing favoritism towards royalty, Gascoigne fearlessly reprimanded the prince for his behavior. This image showcases an intense courtroom atmosphere with its detailed depiction of costumes and courtly surroundings. The engraving skillfully brings to life this pivotal moment in English history when justice prevailed over royal privilege. The print is part of a private collection and was created by artist Henry Gillard Glindoni (1852-1913). It was featured in Cassells History of England published around 1920 by Cassell and Company Limited. Through this artwork from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, viewers are transported back in time to witness a clash between power and justice that ultimately led to Prince Henry acknowledging the fairness of Judge Gascoigne's sentence.
