Wolseley motor launch on slipway, 1914. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch on slipway, 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a Wolseley motor launch on a slipway in 1914. Created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, the image showcases the expertise of both the renowned British motor vehicle manufacturer, Wolseley Motors, and the esteemed marine power-unit builders, Teddington Launch Works. Initially partnering with Teddington Launch Works to supply engines for launches, Wolseley soon expanded their production to meet growing demand for marine engines. They designed and manufactured engines not only for launches but also hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. The larger vessels were skillfully constructed by S. E. Saunders Ltd. , located at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The photograph offers a glimpse into early 20th-century transportation as it showcases this sleek motor launch resting on the slipway before its journey across waterways. The hull's elegant design is complemented by its monochrome presentation which adds an air of nostalgia to this historic moment. With its rich history rooted in England's maritime heritage, this print serves as a testament to both technological advancements in road transport and water transport during that era. It pays homage to Arthur Henry Kirk's artistic vision while highlighting William Umpleby Kirk's engineering prowess. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of how far we have come in terms of transportation technology while appreciating the craftsmanship that went into creating these magnificent vessels over a century ago.
