William, Earl of Chatham, 1790

William, Earl of Chatham, 1790. William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708-1778), British statesman of the Whig group who led the government of Great Britain twice in the middle of the 18th century. Historians call him Pitt of Chatham, or William Pitt the Elder to distinguish from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who also was a prime minister. Pitt was also known as The Great Commoner, because of his long-standing refusal to accept a title until 1766. From The History of England, by David Hume. [T. Cadell, Edinburgh, 1789]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, a prominent British statesman of the 18th century. Known as Pitt of Chatham or William Pitt the Elder, he led the government of Great Britain twice during his career. His refusal to accept a title until 1766 earned him the nickname "The Great Commoner" symbolizing his dedication to serving the people rather than seeking personal glory. In this striking portrait, captured by Thomas Cadell and published in David Hume's "The History of England" we see Earl William gazing directly at the viewer with an air of authority and wisdom. The monochrome engraving adds a sense of timelessness to this historic image. As one delves into British history, it becomes evident that Earl William played a significant role in shaping the nation's political landscape. This print serves as a reminder not only of his accomplishments but also highlights his distinction from his son, William Pitt the Younger, who would later become prime minister himself. With its rich historical context and meticulous attention to detail, this print is not just an artistic masterpiece but also an invaluable artifact that allows us to connect with one of Britain's most influential statesmen.
