William Pitt the Younger Collection

William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806) was a British statesman and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1783 to 1801 and again from 1804 to 1806. He was born into a wealthy family in London, England and educated at Cambridge University. He entered politics at an early age, becoming a Member of Parliament in 1781. His political career was marked by his strong support for the abolition of slavery and his opposition to Catholic emancipation. During his time as Prime Minister he oversaw Britain's victory over France during the Napoleonic Wars, as well as major reforms such as the abolition of income tax and the introduction of free trade. Pitt is widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest statesmen, with many historians considering him one of Europe's most influential leaders in the late eighteenth century.
