EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1845, we are transported back in time to witness a momentous event - the visit of the esteemed Rajah of Travancore to Madras. The creator remains unknown, but their artistry has beautifully captured this historical occasion. The image showcases the grandeur and opulence surrounding the Rajah's arrival. Mounted on his majestic state elephant, adorned with dazzling jewels and luxurious velvets, his Highness commands attention as he enters Quilon (Kollam), Kerala in India. Two peons stand by his side, ready with choudries or fly-brushes to ensure no insect or dust disturbs the Royal personage. Accompanying him are his brother, His Highness the Elliah Rajah, and his nephew riding splendidly decorated horses. Preceding them is a silver state palanquin fitted with dark green velvet – a symbol of power and prestige. This procession captures not only the magnificence of Indian royalty but also highlights British influence during that era. It reflects an era when Britain held sway over vast territories as part of its empire. Through this remarkable engraving from "Illustrated London News" we catch a glimpse into history – witnessing tradition merging with imperialism.
