The village of Naree, India, c1860. Artist: MJ Starling
The village of Naree, India, c1860. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the village of Naree in India, circa 1860. The artist, MJ Starling, skillfully captures the essence of this remote and mountainous region. However, behind the serene landscape lies a significant historical event - the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The rebellion began in Meerut and quickly spread throughout north-central India, posing a formidable threat to British power during their rule over India. Known by various names such as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny, it is also referred to as the Great Rebellion or even the First War of Independence in India. In this print from "The History of the Indian Mutiny" by Charles Ball, we are reminded of both the beauty and complexity that existed during this tumultuous period. The village stands as a testament to resilience amidst chaos while serving as a backdrop for an event that forever altered history. As we gaze upon this monochrome engraving, we can't help but be drawn into its rich details - from the intricate buildings nestled against majestic mountains to its depiction of Hindoostan (India). It serves as a poignant reminder of how art can capture not only physical landscapes but also moments frozen in time. Through this print's evocative portrayal, we are transported back to an era where struggle met serenity; where ordinary lives intertwined with extraordinary events. It is indeed a powerful testament to both artistic talent and historical significance.
