View of the port of St Peter and St Paul, Kamchatka, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'View of the Port of St. Peter and St. Paul, Kamchatka,' is an exquisite piece of 19th century art that transports us back in time to the Russian port city nestled on the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The image, created by renowned German naturalist Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and French lithographer Edouard Jean Marie Hostein, is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, this expedition, led by Captain Fedor Litke, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The voyage was part of a series of scientific naval surveys conducted by Russia in the first half of the 19th century. In this scene, we see the bustling port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with its wooden houses, churches, and ships anchored in the bay. The rugged coastline, dotted with boulders and cliffs, serves as a stark contrast to the tranquil waters. Children play near the shore, while men work on the boats and tend to their animals. A group of dogs gathers near a fence, and a boy stands guard with a gun, hinting at the frontier nature of this remote outpost. This stunning lithograph, with its intricate details and beautiful shading, is a testament to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Russian Far East. It offers a glimpse into the meeting of frontiers, where the wild beauty of nature intertwines with human ingenuity and perseverance.
