View of Baynards Castle. late 18th century. Artist: Wooding
View of Baynards Castle. late 18th century. Baynards Castle refers to buildings on two neighbouring sites fronting the River Thames in the City of London. The first building was a Norman fortification constructed by Ralph Baynard and demolished by King John in 1213. It was reconstructed as a royal palace by Henry VII at the end of the 15th century. Henry VIII gave it to Catherine of Aragon on the eve of their wedding. Baynards Castle was left in ruins after the Great Fire of London in 1666, although fragments survived into the 19th century. Published by Alexander Hogg at the Kings Arms, No.16 Paternoster Row

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting "View of Baynards Castle" in the late 18th century. The artist, Wooding, skillfully depicts the architectural grandeur of this historic site located on two adjacent plots along the majestic River Thames in London. Originally built as a Norman fortification by Ralph Baynard, it was unfortunately demolished by King John in 1213. However, its legacy endured as Henry VII reconstructed it into a magnificent royal palace towards the end of the 15th century. Steeped in history and romance, Baynards Castle holds significant cultural importance. It became even more renowned when Henry VIII bestowed it upon Catherine of Aragon just before their nuptials. Tragically, this iconic castle fell victim to the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666; although fragments survived until much later. Published by Alexander Hogg at his esteemed establishment on Paternoster Row, this engraving showcases not only Wooding's artistic talent but also serves as a valuable historical document for future generations to appreciate and admire. With its monochrome palette emphasizing intricate details and textures, this print transports viewers back to an era where castles stood tall against picturesque landscapes. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are reminded of both England's rich heritage and our collective responsibility to preserve these architectural treasures that have shaped our nation's identity throughout centuries gone by.
