EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant chromolithograph print captures the essence of Charles Alfred Cripps, a prominent figure in British politics and law during the early 20th century. Created by the renowned artist Spy for Vanity Fair in 1902, this portrait showcases Cripps' distinguished appearance and his significant roles within both political and religious spheres. Cripps, an accomplished barrister and politician, served as Attorney General to the Prince of Wales from 1895 until 1914. Throughout his career, he represented various constituencies as a Conservative Member of Parliament before accepting a peerage. Notably, in 1923 he made a surprising move across party lines to join the Labour Party and later became Leader of the Labour Peers. Beyond politics, Cripps was deeply involved in Church affairs due to his devout Anglican faith. He held prestigious positions such as Vicar-General of York in 1900 and Vicar-General of Canterbury in 1902. These roles exemplify his commitment to Christianity and highlight his influence within the Church of England. In this caricature-like portrayal by Spy, Cripps is depicted wearing traditional legal attire with a wig atop his head while holding literature symbolizing knowledge and justice. His spectacles add an air of intellectualism to his countenance. The use of vivid colors brings life to this image from over a century ago. Overall, this print offers us insight into Charles Alfred Cripps' multifaceted persona as both statesman and religious leader—a man who left an indelible mark on British history through his contributions to law, politics, religion, and society at large.
