Urban regeneration in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1966. Artist: Michael Walters

Urban regeneration in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1966. The wholesale warehouse of greengrocer Fred Ward was photographed in 1966 prior to being demolished as part of the new road bypass project in the South Yorkshire town of Mexborough. The premises on Market Street were replaced with a new set of public conveniences which were, unfortunately and inconveniently, locked by Doncaster Council in the late 1990s and remain so today

EDITORS COMMENTS
Urban Regeneration in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1966: A Glimpse into the Changing Landscape. This print by artist Michael Walters offers a poignant snapshot of urban regeneration in Mexborough during the mid-1960s. The image showcases the wholesale warehouse of renowned greengrocer Fred Ward, standing tall on Market Street. Little did it know that its days were numbered as part of an ambitious new road bypass project. The photograph captures both the resilience and vulnerability of buildings that have witnessed decades of bustling activity. As progress marched forward, this once-thriving hub would soon make way for a new set of public conveniences intended to serve the growing community. However, fate had other plans for these facilities. In an unfortunate twist, Doncaster Council decided to lock them up in the late 1990s, rendering them inconveniently inaccessible to locals and visitors alike even today. Walters' monochrome composition beautifully encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of how urban renewal can shape communities over time. It prompts us to reflect on the delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing progress. As we gaze upon this evocative image from half a century ago, let us appreciate both the rich history embedded within our towns and cities while contemplating how future generations will continue their own journey towards transformation.
