"Time of the Persecution of the Christian Reformers in Paris, in 1559" - painted by J.C. Hook, A.R.A. - from the Exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1854. We are not sure...that religious animosities are altogether fitting subjects for the pencil of the painter...Mr. Hook, in his well-told story, has represented the Roman Catholics of France in 1559 triumphant in the streets, singing canticles before images, inviting all who passed by to join in their devotion, and insulting and beating those whose belief led them to a contrary worship. Observe the insult that is offered to the Christian Reformer in the very centre of the picture. How well the incident is told! Mark the triumph of the priest and the seemly forbearance of the persecuted. Mr. Hook has seldom been more successful in catching and rendering contrasts of this pictorial, though...in some respects, this disagreeable nature'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

Time of the Persecution of the Christian Reformers in Paris, in 1559,

EDITORS COMMENTS
painted by J.C. Hook, A.R.A., is a powerful and evocative work of art that captures the religious tensions and animosities of 16th century Paris. This masterpiece, created by Harvey Orrin Smith in 1854, depicts a scene of triumphant Roman Catholics in the streets of Paris, singing hymns before their images and mocking and persecuting the Christian reformers. The painting, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854, is described in the "Illustrated London News" as a "well-told story" that effectively conveys the contrast between the triumphant Catholic crowd and the persecuted Protestant reformers. The central figure of the painting is a Christian Reformer, who is being insulted and mocked by a priest, while the Catholic crowd looks on with glee. The triumphant priest raises his hand in victory, while the persecuted reformer maintains a calm and forbearing expression. The painting is a poignant reminder of the religious strife and persecution that marked the 16th century in Europe. The contrast between the triumphant Catholics and the persecuted Protestants is stark, and the painting effectively conveys the emotional and psychological impact of religious intolerance. The painting's creator, Harvey Orrin Smith, was known for his ability to capture contrasts and tell stories through his art, and "Time of the Persecution of the Christian Reformers in Paris, in 1559" is one of his most successful works in this regard. The painting is a powerful and thought-provoking work that continues to resonate with viewers today, reminding us of the importance of religious tolerance and the dangers of intolerance and persecution.
