Temple Bar, London, 19th century
Temple Bar, London, 19th century. The Temple Bar stood at the junction of Fleet Street and The Strand and marked the western boundary of the City of London. The gate was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1670s. It was moved in 1878 in the interest of road widening in and re-erected two years later as the gate to Theobalds Park, the home of the brewer Henry Meux in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. In 2004 it was brought back to London as part of the Paternoster Square redevelopment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of 19th century London. The focal point of the image is Temple Bar, a magnificent architectural feature that once stood at the junction of Fleet Street and The Strand. This iconic gate, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1670s, marked the western boundary of the City of London. Intriguingly, this historic landmark was relocated in 1878 due to road widening efforts and found its new home as the entrance to Theobalds Park in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire - owned by brewer Henry Meux. However, after more than a century away from its original location, Temple Bar returned to London in 2004 as part of the Paternoster Square redevelopment. The monochrome composition adds an air of nostalgia and highlights intricate details such as statues adorning this grand archway. It serves as a reminder not only of Britain's rich architectural heritage but also its ever-evolving urban landscape. As we gaze upon this print captured by an unknown creator from The Print Collector collection, we are transported back through time - witnessing centuries-old buildings lining these historic streets. This photograph stands as a testament to both England's enduring history and its commitment to preserving cultural treasures for generations to come.
