EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dating back to the 19th century, depicts a panoramic view of Steam-ships reconnoitring at Sveaborg in the Gulf of Finland during the Crimean War. The image, published in the Illustrated London News on May 27, 1854, offers a glimpse into the strategic intelligence gathering efforts of the British Royal Navy. The photograph captures the fortress of Sveaborg, now known as Suomenlinna in modern-day Finland, and a portion of the town of Helsingfors, now Helsinki. Notable landmarks marked in the image include the 'Cathedral of Helsingfors' (Helsinki Cathedral), the islands of Stora Rantan and Langorn, and 'West Svarto'. The panoramic sketch was taken on May 24, 1854, and represents the reconnaissance of the fortifications. The Royal Navy ships H.M.S. Dauntless and Basilisk are seen close in under steam to examine the defenses. The fortresses of Sveaborg occupy no less than seven islands, several of which are united by bridges. The fortresses are said to mount 800 cannon and possess a garrison of 12,000 men. The photograph is a testament to the importance of naval intelligence during wartime and the strategic role of the Royal Navy in defending British interests. The image also highlights the architectural grandeur of the fortresses and the religious significance of the cathedral, which remains an iconic landmark in Helsinki today.
