Ships of Willem Barents expedition to the Arctic, 1596. Barents (d 1597) was a Dutch navigator who led expeditions in 1594, 1595 and 1596-1597 in search of a Northeast Passage to Asia. None of the expeditions succeeded in finding an open route to the Far East, and on the third voyage Barents ship became trapped in the ice, forcing the crew to remain in the Arctic over the winter. The ship was not released by the ice as soon as expected in the spring, and the crew made their escape in open boats, setting off on 13 June 1597. Most returned home safely, but Barents himself died on 30 June. This print captures a significant moment in history - the ships of Willem Barents' expedition to the Arctic in 1596. Led by the Dutch navigator, Barents, these expeditions aimed to find a Northeast Passage to Asia but unfortunately fell short of their goal. In this particular image, we witness Barents' ship and Jan Corneliszoon Rijp's vessel parting ways in July 1596. As they bid farewell, Barents sets his course east towards Novaya Zemlya while Rijp sails north towards Spitzbergen. Little did they know that fate had different plans for them. Trapped in ice during their third voyage, Barents and his crew were forced to endure an Arctic winter. When spring arrived and their ship was not released as expected, they made a daring escape on open boats on June 13th, 1597. While most of the crew managed to return home safely from this treacherous journey, sadly Willem Barents himself met his demise on June 30th.
