Scene from Costas opera of "Don Carlos", 1844. Creator: Unknown

Scene from Costas opera of " Don Carlos", 1844. The tragic denouement, which is supposed to take place in the Huerta Reale, or royal garden, at midnight. After singing a parting duet of exquisite tenderness, the guilty lovers, Carlos and Isabella, are surprised by the enraged monarch, Philip, attended by the brothers of the Holy Inquisition...Escape is hopeless - so after outpouring with passionate fervor a story of his wrongs to the King, Carlos snatches a dagger from Philips side and plunges it in his own. The consternation, produced by this tragic deed, is...immense, and the effect very imposing. The guilty and wretched Isabella, having indulged for some time in a paroxysm of musical sorrow, is rudely laid hold of and borne away to either death or that lingering life which the tender mercies of the sacred fraternity might provide for her, in some convent cell or dungeon. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the opera "Don Carlos" by Costa, dating back to 1844. The tragic denouement unfolds in the Huerta Reale, the royal garden, at midnight. As Carlos and Isabella, the guilty lovers, sing their poignant farewell duet filled with exquisite tenderness, they are suddenly confronted by an enraged monarch, Philip. Accompanied by the brothers of the Holy Inquisition, escape becomes futile for our protagonists. In a desperate act fueled by his grievances against King Philip, Carlos seizes a dagger from his side and plunges it into his own heart. The impact of this tragic deed is immense and leaves everyone present in utter consternation. The atmosphere is imposing as grief fills the air. Meanwhile, Isabella - tormented and wretched - expresses her sorrow through music before being forcefully seized and taken away. Her fate hangs precariously between death or a lingering life that may be orchestrated for her within the confines of a convent cell or dungeon under the tender mercies of the sacred fraternity. This evocative image was originally published in "Illustrated London News" in 1844 (Vol I) without mention of its creator's name but continues to captivate viewers even today with its powerful portrayal of love torn apart by tragedy and betrayal.
