Ruins of Great Zimbabwe, Africa, 1892

Ruins of Great Zimbabwe, Africa, 1892. Ruins including a massive round tower. The discovery in 1867 of ruins of a hilltop fortress and stone monoliths covering a 60 acre site in southern Africa caused great archaeological interest. Great Zimbabwe was at the centre of an inland empire ruled by the Karanga (Shona) people, which reached the peak of its influence between the 11th and 15th centuries. Parts of the ruins date from the 8th century although archaeologists believe that the site was occupied as much as 600 years earlier. From Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society, London, 1892

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the year 1892, offering a glimpse into the mysterious ruins of Great Zimbabwe in Africa. The image showcases an impressive round tower amidst the sprawling remains of what was once a hilltop fortress. These ruins, discovered in 1867, immediately sparked immense interest among archaeologists due to their vast size and historical significance. Stretching across a staggering 60-acre site in southern Africa, Great Zimbabwe served as the heart of an inland empire ruled by the Karanga people. This civilization reached its zenith between the 11th and 15th centuries, leaving behind remnants that date back even further to the 8th century. Archaeologists speculate that this ancient site may have been inhabited as early as six centuries prior. The photograph captures not only the architectural marvels but also nature's reclamation of these forgotten structures. Overgrown with lush vegetation and surrounded by towering trees, it is evident that time has woven its tapestry over this once-thriving city. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene frozen in time, we are reminded of both our human capacity for greatness and our transient existence on this continent called Africa. The engraving serves as a testament to our curiosity about history's mysteries and our relentless pursuit of knowledge through archaeological exploration. This remarkable print from Heritage Images allows us to appreciate the grandeur of Great Zimbabwe while contemplating its enigmatic past—a visual portal connecting us with generations long gone.
