The Revolution in Naples - before Capua, Sept. 19 - severe fire on the national troops... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Revolution in Naples - before Capua, Sept. 19 - severe fire on the national troops from the guns of the fortress - from a sketch by our special artist in south Italy, 1860. General Turr sent a strong column against Capua, as if to make an assault on the town, and that column was immediately attacked by 10, 000 Royalists. During that time other corps of Garibaldians quietly crossed the river, and established themselves on the heights of Cajazzo... A sharp attack was to be made from the main road, which was to be aided by another along the direct road from Naples, which approaches Capua from due south. This auxiliary attack was confided to General Spangaro. General Rostoff commanded the troops at Santa Maria. The whole movement was merely a feint to engage the attention of the guns and garrison generally, while Garibaldi and Turr crossed the Voltumo, and got round to the north-easterly side of Capua, to reconnoitre and obtain possession of Cajazzo, where the high ground entirely commands the city'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the intensity and chaos of the Revolution in Naples, specifically the severe fire on the national troops before the Battle of Capua in September 1860. The exact creator of this print remains unknown, but it was inspired by a sketch made by a special artist in South Italy during the pivotal moment of the Italian Unification. The scene unfolds as General Turr led a strong column towards Capua, intending to make an assault on the town. However, they were met with resistance from 10,000 Royalists, resulting in a fierce battle. Amidst the chaos, other Garibaldian corps quietly crossed the river and established themselves on the heights of Cajazzo. The main attack was planned along the main road, aided by another attack from the direct road from Naples. General Spangaro was entrusted with leading this auxiliary attack, while General Rostoff commanded the troops at Santa Maria. The entire movement was a strategic feint, designed to engage the attention of the guns and garrison, allowing Garibaldi and Turr to cross the Voltumo and get around to the north-easterly side of Capua. Here, they aimed to reconnoiter and secure the crucial high ground that commanded the city. The smoke and flames from the battle can be seen rising in the background, adding to the sense of urgency and danger. The determination and courage of the soldiers, as well as their strategic prowess, are evident in this powerful and evocative image. The Revolution in Naples was a turning point in the Italian Unification, and this print offers a fascinating glimpse into the events that shaped the course of history.
