A Red Study, 1875. Artist: Joseph Swain
A Red Study, 1875. This cartoon shows Dr Henry Edward Manning gazing into the fire. Manning had in fact been one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. He had been made Archbishop of Westminster at the beginning of 1874, but in March 1875, Pope Pius IX created six new cardinals, one of which was Manning. He is depicted holding a cardinals hat on his knee as he visualises the Papal crown in the flames before him. Thus, the normal brown study becomes a red one. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 3, 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "A Red Study, 1875" we are transported back to a moment in history when Dr Henry Edward Manning's life took a significant turn. The image, created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, captures Manning sitting before a fireplace, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. Manning was once a prominent leader of the Oxford Movement but shocked many when he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. His journey led him to become Archbishop of Westminster in 1874. However, it was in March 1875 that Pope Pius IX elevated Manning and five others to the esteemed position of cardinal. The photograph depicts Manning holding a cardinals hat on his knee while envisioning the Papal crown within the fiery depths before him. As he contemplates his newfound role within the Catholic Church hierarchy, his usual brown study is transformed into one drenched with vibrant red hues. This satirical engraving from Punch magazine offers an intriguing glimpse into British politics and religious dynamics during the nineteenth century. It showcases not only Manning's personal transformation but also highlights tensions between different branches of Christianity. Through this monochrome image, we witness an important moment in history where faith intersects with power and tradition clashes with change. It serves as a reminder of how individuals can undergo profound transformations that shape their destinies and impact society at large.
