This photograph print, titled "Proclamation of Peace at Trafalgar-Square, 1856," depicts a momentous occasion in London's history as the city came together to celebrate the end of the Crimean War. The image, created by an unknown artist for the "Illustrated London News," captures the excitement and jubilation of the crowd as they gathered in Trafalgar Square to witness the official ceremony. In the foreground, various dignitaries and officials, including Life Guards, Beadles of Westminster, the High Constable, the High Bailiff and Deputy-Steward of Westminster, Knight Marshal's men, drummers, drum-majors, trumpets, and a sergeant trumpeter, make their way through the throngs of people. The Trafalgar-square district is filled with one of those dense, moving masses that seem only possible when an entire capital has turned itself outdoors. The background of the print reveals an equestrian statue of Charles I, Nelson's Column, and the National Gallery, adding to the grandeur of the scene. The riders, gesturing and raising their hats in celebration, are a testament to the collective relief and joy felt by the British people at the end of the war. This evocative image, with its blend of historical figures, architecture, and the energy of the crowd, is a powerful reminder of the pageantry and unity that marked this significant moment in London's history.
