EDITORS COMMENTS
Prince Edward, later King Edward VI, c1540, (1902). Artist: Bruckmann In this print, we are transported back to the 16th century to catch a glimpse of Prince Edward, who would later become King Edward VI. The son of the infamous Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, young Edward ascended to the throne at just nine years old in 1547. This portrait captures his youthful innocence and regal presence. Dressed in an exquisite Tudor-style outfit with intricate details and fine craftsmanship, he wears a cap adorned with a magnificent ostrich feather that adds an air of elegance to his appearance. His piercing eyes reflect both curiosity and wisdom beyond his tender age. Edward's reign was marked by fervent Protestant reform as he sought to reshape England's religious landscape. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by what is believed to be tuberculosis when he was still in his teens. This remarkable illustration comes from A F Pollard's book on Henry VIII published in 1902. It showcases the artistic talent of Bruckmann while paying homage to Hans Holbein the Younger's original painting of King Edward VI. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of the rich history that shaped our world centuries ago. It serves as a poignant reminder of a young prince whose legacy continues to resonate through time.
