EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished portrait of Mr. Cecil Rhodes, captured in 1901 by artist Mortimer Luddington Menpes. A prominent figure in history, Cecil Rhodes amassed his fortune through the Kimberley diamond mines and established De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888. As the Managing Director of the British South Africa Company, he governed a vast territory that encompasses present-day Zimbabwe, formerly known as Rhodesia. Rhodes's influence extended beyond business and into politics. He served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 until his resignation in 1896 due to his involvement in instigating the Jameson Raid into Transvaal. Despite this controversy, Rhodes left behind a lasting legacy with his philanthropy. In his will, he allocated funds to establish the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University for both Germans and Americans. In this enigmatic portrait, we see an elderly man donning a hat with shadows casting across his face—a symbol of wisdom acquired through years of experience. The image captures not only Rhodes's physical appearance but also hints at the mystery surrounding him—a statesman who played significant roles in industry and politics during a transformative era. Preserved within this print is a glimpse into history—an intimate portrayal that encapsulates Cecil John Rhodes's complex persona as an influential politician, mining magnate, and benefactor whose impact resonates even today.
