The Polar Party: On the Trail, c1910, (1913). Artist: Henry Bowers

The Polar Party: On the Trail, c1910, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Polar Party: On the Trail, c1910, (1913) captures a poignant moment in history as British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team embark on their final expedition. Led by Scott, this brave group of explorers set out from London on 1 June 1910 with the goal of reaching the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition was not only an ambitious quest for geographical conquest but also a scientific endeavor to further our understanding of this remote region. In this print by artist Henry Bowers, we see Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - forging ahead through treacherous icy terrain. Their determination is evident in their resolute expressions as they face unimaginable challenges along their arduous journey. Tragically, upon reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it. Despite their disappointment and dwindling supplies due to relentless blizzards, these courageous men pressed onward until they succumbed to the harsh conditions at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were later discovered eight months after their demise – a testament to their unwavering spirit and sacrifice in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. This photograph serves as a reminder of both human resilience in extreme circumstances and the indelible mark left by those who dared to venture into uncharted territories.
