The Pilgrim Fathers leaving Delft Haven on their voyage to America, July 1620 (1878). The Pilgrim Fathers, members of the English Separatist Church sect of Puritans fled religious persecution in 1609, becoming exiles in the Netherlands. They decided to seek a new life in the New World, and sailed from Delft in a small ship, the Speedwell, to rendezvous with another vessel, the Mayflower. It transpired that only the Mayflower would be able to withstand the rigours of the trnsatlantic voyage, and all the Pilgrims set sail aboard her from Plymouth. The Pilgrim Fathers Leaving Delft Haven on their Voyage to America, July 1620 (1878)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history - the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Delft Haven on their courageous journey to America. In 1609, these brave members of the English Separatist Church sect of Puritans sought refuge in the Netherlands due to religious persecution. However, their longing for a new life led them to embark on an arduous transatlantic voyage. The image showcases a crowded scene as men, women, and children gather near the water's edge. With determination etched upon their faces, they kneel in prayer before boarding small boats that will take them to another vessel called the Mayflower. Pushing against adversity and religious oppression, these pilgrims demonstrate unwavering faith and resilience. Although initially planning to sail aboard both the Speedwell and Mayflower ships from Plymouth, it became clear that only one vessel could withstand such a treacherous journey. Consequently, all pilgrims set sail together aboard the Mayflower towards New England. After enduring 102 days at sea filled with uncertainty and hardship, they finally reached their destination – marking a pivotal moment in American history. This engraving by Charles West Cope beautifully encapsulates this monumental event with its monochrome depiction of hope amidst tumultuous times. As we reflect upon this powerful image today, let us remember those who risked everything for freedom and opportunity in pursuit of building a better future for generations to come.
