Charles West was a renowned artist in the 19th century, known for his captivating paintings and frescoes. His works depicted various historical events and figures, showcasing his exceptional talent and attention to detail. One of Charles West's notable pieces is "Charles I and Speaker Lenthall, " created around 1850. This painting captures a significant moment in history when King Charles I confronted Speaker William Lenthall during the English Civil War. The intensity of their exchange is beautifully portrayed by West, highlighting his ability to capture emotions on canvas. In another masterpiece titled "Maiden Meditation, " painted in 1847, Charles West Cope showcases his skillful use of light and shadow. The serene atmosphere evokes a sense of tranquility as we witness a young woman deep in contemplation, and is evident that Cope had an eye for capturing human emotion through art. West's talent extended beyond traditional paintings; he also contributed to the Exhibition of Cartoons in Westminster Hall in 1845. Although the creator remains unknown, this exhibition displayed remarkable artistic skills from various artists including Charles West himself. Amongst his diverse portfolio is "Jacob and Rachel, " a stunning fresco painted by Mr. Cope in 1844. This biblical scene depicts Jacob proposing to Rachel with great tenderness captured within every brushstroke. In addition to historical events, it also excelled at portraiture as seen in his portrait of Samuel Palmer from 1884. With meticulous attention to detail, he brings out Palmer's personality through subtle nuances, making it an exquisite representation of the subject. Collaborating with photographers John & Charles Watkins during the 1860s allowed him to explore new mediums such as photography while still showcasing his artistic prowess. Moreover, West ventured into theatrical scenes like "Othello Relating His Adventures" circa 1870 by T. Vernon where he masterfully portrays Othello recounting tales of his adventures, captivating the audience with his expressive gestures and emotions.
