Pierre Terrail de Bayard, French soldier of the 16th century, 1882-1884. Artist: Gerard
Pierre Terrail de Bayard, French soldier of the 16th century, 1882-1884. Famous for his skill as a commander and for his chivalry, Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard (1473-1524) distiguished himself fighting against the Holy Roman Empire in the Italian Wars. Amongst his exploits he was said to have held the bridge at Garigliano against 200 Spaniards in 1503. In 1513 he was captured by the English after they routed the French army at the Battle of the Spurs. Henry VIII was apparently so impressed with Bayards gallantry that he released him without ransom, subject to his agreement not to take up arms again for six weeks. War broke out again between France and the Holy Roman Empire in 1515 and Bayard successfully held the fortress of Mezieres for long enough to save France from invasion. He later returned to the conflict in Italy, where he was mortally wounded by an arquebus ball at the Battle of the Sesia in 1524. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume II, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Pierre Terrail de Bayard, a renowned French soldier from the 16th century. Created by Gerard in 1882-1884, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of Bayard's heroic life. Bayard was widely celebrated for his exceptional leadership skills and unwavering chivalry. He gained fame through his valiant efforts against the Holy Roman Empire during the Italian Wars. One of his remarkable feats was defending the bridge at Garigliano against a force of 200 Spaniards in 1503. In 1513, Bayard faced capture when the English defeated the French army at the Battle of the Spurs. However, Henry VIII was so impressed by Bayard's gallantry that he released him without ransom on one condition: to abstain from taking up arms for six weeks. When war broke out again between France and the Holy Roman Empire in 1515, Bayard played a crucial role in saving France from invasion by successfully holding onto Mezieres fortress. Tragically, it was during another conflict in Italy that Bayard met his demise. Mortally wounded by an arquebus ball at the Battle of Sesia in 1524, he left behind a legacy as one of history's most esteemed soldiers. This print is part of "La France et les Francais à Travers les Siecles". Volume II edited by F Roy and published by A Challamel in Saint-Antoine between 1882-1884. It serves as a testament to Pierre Terrail de Bayard's indomitable spirit and enduring impact on French military history.
