The new iron-clad fleet: framing of Her Majesty's steam-frigate Achilles, 50 guns, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The new iron-clad fleet: framing of Her Majesty's steam-frigate Achilles, 50 guns, 1862. The construction of this gigantic iron frigate, under the superintendence of Mr. 0. W. Lang, the master shipwright of Chatham Dockyard, is proceeding with the greatest rapidity towards completion: the vessel is nearly in frame, and the progress day by day is something wonderful...the forward state of everything in connection with the new fleet at this establishment reflects the highest credit on all the officials connected with it. The stem of the Achilles...is a splendid specimen of iron-forging; it was furnished by the Thames Iron and Shipbuilding Company...and weighs upwards of twenty tons. This vessel, and the new frigates now building...are all to be coated with 5½-inch iron plates, with ten inches of teak, and the same inner skin of wrought iron. In these it is hoped that reducing the teak backing and increasing the armour plate will add to the strength of the ship'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the framing process of Her Majesty's steam-frigate Achilles, a formidable ironclad warship with an impressive armament of 50 guns, under construction at Chatham Dockyard in 1862. The vessel, under the expert supervision of Mr. O.W. Lang, the master shipwright, was nearing completion at an astonishing pace. The progress of the new fleet at this establishment was a testament to the dedication and skill of all those involved. The stem of the Achilles, a magnificent example of iron forging, is shown in this image. It was supplied by the renowned Thames Iron and Shipbuilding Company and weighed over twenty tons. This vessel, along with the new frigates being built, were all intended to be sheathed in 5½-inch iron plates, with a ten-inch layer of teak and an inner skin of wrought iron. By reducing the teak backing and increasing the armour plate, it was hoped that the strength of the ship would be significantly enhanced. The construction of the Achilles and the new fleet at Chatham Dockyard was a marvel of engineering and a reflection of the advancements in shipbuilding technology during this period. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the creation of these magnificent ironclad warships that would play a crucial role in the naval battles of the future.
