EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a map titled "Neri to Akra, c1915" created by Stanfords Geographical Establishment. The map traces the remarkable journey of British writer, soldier, and diplomatic advisor Mark Sykes through Turkey during the early 20th century when it was still part of the Ottoman Empire. The detailed map highlights various features such as castles, ruins, fountains, swamps, and caravan routes that Sykes encountered on his expedition. Covering Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Persia (modern-day Iran), and Turkey itself; this extensive travelogue reflects Sykes' deep exploration of the Middle East between 1905 and 1913. Sykes led an extraordinary life filled with diverse accomplishments. He served as an honorary attache to the British Embassy in Constantinople from 1905 to 1906 before being elected to parliament. During World War I, he worked in the Intelligence department of the War Office. Tragically succumbing to Spanish flu at just 39 years old in 1919. "The Caliphs Last Heritage: A Short History of the Turkish Empire" authored by Lieutenant Colonel Sir Mark Sykes himself is where this invaluable map finds its origin within Macmillan & Co's publication from London in 1915. Stanford's Geographical Establishment has masterfully preserved this historical gem which not only provides geographical insights but also serves as a testament to one man's adventurous spirit and profound contributions to both academia and diplomacy during a transformative era for Turkey and its neighboring nations.
