Mother and Child, c. 1855. Creator: Unidentified Photographer
Mother and Child, c. 1855. Some of the most inventive and technically skilled practitioners in the early history of photography are as yet unidentified. However, with time more of these individuals will probably be recognized by name. Introduced into America soon after its invention in 1839 by the Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre, the daguerreotype flourished from 1840 to the mid-1860s. This beautiful daguerreotype in its original case is an outstanding example of a very popular subject: mother and child. The polished silver plate precisely renders in warm tones the likeness of the elaborately dressed sitters. The mother gently steadied the childs head so that it would not move during the long exposure required by the daguerreotype process. Clearly, the makers knowledge of chemistry and traditional principles of design were necessary for this charming portrait

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mother and Child, c. 1855" showcases the remarkable talent of an unidentified photographer from the early history of photography. Despite their anonymity, these skilled practitioners have left a lasting legacy through their inventive techniques and technical prowess. Introduced to America in 1839 by Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre, the daguerreotype quickly gained popularity until the mid-1860s. This particular daguerreotype, presented in its original case, exemplifies a beloved subject matter: a mother with her child. The polished silver plate beautifully captures warm tones that bring to life the intricately dressed subjects. In this tender portrait, we witness the mother's gentle touch as she steadies her child's head during the lengthy exposure required by the daguerreotype process. The photographer's deep understanding of chemistry and traditional design principles is evident in every detail of this charming artwork. Dating back to the 19th century in America, this sixth plate daguerreotype has been preserved as part of The Cleveland Museum of Art collection.
