EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by artist Michael Walters in 1963, showcases the iconic Montague Buildings in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. These historic buildings were constructed around 1900 on the grounds of a former quarry and have housed numerous retailers throughout the years. In this snapshot, we catch a glimpse of Clays, one of Mexborough's beloved shops at that time. The shop window displays an array of household items including prams, white goods, and children's bicycles. The Montague Buildings hold great significance as they represent the changing face of retail over the decades. From their Edwardian architecture to their prime location on a bustling avenue in Doncaster, these buildings embody British history and industry. It is worth noting that Madam Florence was one of Mexborough's oldest shops before it sadly closed during the recession in 2009. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of how economic challenges can impact even longstanding establishments. Michael Walters' monochrome composition beautifully captures not only the exterior charm but also reflects upon an era when shopping was more than just transactions; it was an experience filled with anticipation and discovery. As we gaze upon this image from half a century ago, we are transported back to a vibrant street scene where shop fronts played an integral role in shaping communities and fostering local commerce. This print is not only a testament to Michael Walters' talent but also serves as an invaluable record documenting our cultural heritage for generations to come.
