Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: welding the coil, 1862. Creator: W Thomas

Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: welding the coil, 1862. An Armstrong gun was a uniquely designed type of rifled breech-loading field and heavy gun designed by Sir William Armstrong and manufactured in England beginning in 1855 by the Elswick Ordnance Company and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, south-east London. Such guns involved a built-up gun construction system of a wrought-iron (later of mild steel) tube surrounded by a number of wrought-iron strengthening coils shrunk over the inner tube to keep it under compression. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: welding the coil, 1862," offers a glimpse into the intricate and dangerous process of creating an Armstrong gun during the height of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Sir William Armstrong, a renowned inventor, designed this uniquely crafted rifled breech-loading gun, which was manufactured at the Elswick Ordnance Company and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The image captures the moment as a skilled metalworker, dressed in protective clothing including an apron, carefully welds a coil around the inner tube of the gun. The furnace in the background roars with heat, illuminating the dimly lit room with an orange glow. The men in the photograph, all focused on their tasks, demonstrate the precision and dedication required to manufacture these powerful weapons. The Armstrong gun was a groundbreaking innovation, featuring a built-up gun construction system of a wrought-iron tube surrounded by a number of wrought-iron strengthening coils. This design kept the inner tube under compression, ensuring the gun's strength and durability. The Armstrong gun became a crucial component of the British military's arsenal, serving both in the field and in heavy fortifications. This photograph, taken by W. Thomas for the Illustrated London News, not only showcases the impressive craftsmanship of the era but also highlights the danger and intensity of the manufacturing process. The dark, moody atmosphere and the concentration of the workers create an intriguing and captivating image that transports us back in time to the heart of the Industrial Revolution.
