Lieutenant (Birdie) Bowers (1883-1912), Scottish born polar explorer, 1916

Lieutenant Henry Robertson (Birdie) Bowers (1883-1912). Scottish born polar explorer, 1916. Henry Robertson was in charge of landing, stores, navigation and the arrangement of sledging rations on Captain Scotts final expedition, which left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. They reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Evans was one of the few to survive the expedition. John Player & Sons cigarette card series Polar Exploration, 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lieutenant (Birdie) Bowers, a Scottish-born polar explorer from the early 20th century. In 1916, John Player & Sons released this cigarette card as part of their Polar Exploration series. Lieutenant Henry Robertson (Birdie) Bowers played a crucial role in Captain Scott's final expedition to the South Pole, which commenced on June 1,1910. Bowers was entrusted with various responsibilities during the expedition, including landing operations, navigation, and organizing sledging rations. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17,1912, they were heartbroken to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Hindered by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his team tragically perished at the end of March. Eight months later, their bodies and diaries were discovered; only a few survived this ill-fated journey. Despite facing failure in achieving their objective of being the first to reach the South Pole for Britain, Bowers' contribution remains significant in polar exploration history. In this photograph print captured by The Print Collector29 from Heritage Images collection archives (not affiliated with any commercial use), we see Lieutenant Birdie Bowers dressed in his expedition attire—a testament to his bravery and determination amidst harsh Antarctic conditions. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by explorers like Bowers who pushed boundaries in pursuit of scientific discovery and national pride during an era marked by intense international competition for polar supremacy.
