Lady Mary, 16th century, (1910)
Lady Mary, 16th century, (1910). Portrait of Queen Mary wearing a pyramidal style headdress with ribbed bands of silk upon the forehead forming the foundation, a small portion of hair appearing underneath it. Round the face is a wired framework of the kennel form, over which is a broad band which is looped upon either side and pinned on top of the head. The bag which previously hung down the back is also brought up and pinned - as it is stiffened, it presents a rather ungainly appearance as it projects on either side. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lady Mary, a prominent figure from the 16th century. The portrait, created in 1910 by Emily Jessie Ashdown, beautifully captures Queen Mary wearing an exquisite pyramidal style headdress adorned with ribbed bands of silk. Her regal presence is enhanced by the intricate details of her attire. The headdress features a wired framework in the shape of a kennel form around her face, with a broad band looped on either side and pinned on top of her head. A small portion of hair peeks out from underneath this magnificent structure. The bag that traditionally hangs down the back has been brought up and pinned to create an unconventional yet striking appearance. Queen Mary's jewelry adds further elegance to her ensemble, as she wears a necklace that complements her royal status. This portrait not only showcases Lady Mary's beauty but also provides insight into the fashion trends and customs prevalent during this period. Emily Jessie Ashdown skillfully captures every detail in this monochrome image, paying homage to Hans Holbein the Younger's original artwork depicting Queen Mary I. Through this print, we are transported back in time to witness the grandeur and sophistication associated with royalty during the reign of Queen Mary Tudor.
