The International Exhibition: the Admiralty Department of the Naval Court, 1862. Creator: Smyth
The International Exhibition: the Admiralty Department of the Naval Court, 1862. The subject selected for our Engraving is that part of the Naval Court devoted to the contributions of the Lords of the Admiralty, consisting almost entirely, as a matter of course, of models of fighting-ships, constructed at the Royal dockyards during the last hundred years, with many elaborate and beautiful miniature vessels of a much earlier date; among the latter the Great Harry, the first man-of-war belonging to our Royal Navy, built in fourteen hundred and eighty- eight; the Royal Sovereign and the Royal William, ships of nearly two hundred years later date, showing a wonderful advance upon the earlier vessel; and another century later the unfortunate Royal George, the foundering of which at Spithead, with nearly all hands, is one of the saddest records of our naval history. There is, in fact, scarcely anything connected with nautical matters, as far as the vessels themselves and their complete equipment is concerned, that any one curious for information and instruction may not find elaborately illustrated in this and the other parts of this most interesting portion of the place'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, created by Smyth in 1862, showcases The International Exhibition's Admiralty Department of the Naval Court. The image highlights the section of the Naval Court dedicated to the Lords of the Admiralty, featuring an impressive collection of model fighting-ships. The display predominantly comprises models of ships constructed at the Royal dockyards over the past century, with many intricately detailed miniature vessels dating back to much earlier periods. Among these ancient vessels, the Great Harry, the first man-of-war belonging to the Royal Navy, built in 1488, stands out. The Royal Sovereign and the Royal William, ships from nearly two hundred years later, demonstrate remarkable advancements in naval shipbuilding. Furthermore, the unfortunate Royal George is displayed, a ship whose foundering at Spithead in 1744 resulted in the loss of nearly all hands, leaving a tragic mark in our naval history. This part of the exhibition offers a wealth of information and instruction for anyone with a curiosity for nautical matters. The models, in their entirety and complete equipment, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of naval shipbuilding throughout history. The Admiralty Department of the Naval Court at The International Exhibition was a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to learn about the rich maritime history of the United Kingdom.
