Hercules Driving Envy from the Temple of the Muses, 1522-24. Creator: Ugo da Carpi (Italian, c
Hercules Driving Envy from the Temple of the Muses, 1522-24. In this allegory, not linked to a particular myth, Hercules applies his brute force in the service of art and knowledge. Pointing toward the archway, Apollo banishes the vice of Avarice from the Temple of the Muses. A personification of greed, Avarice carries a hoard of treasure in her arms as Hercules, a character of virtuous strength, chases her out. Apollo sits next to the war goddess Athena, identified by her helmet, shield, and spear. Here she represents wisdom, and fulfills a civilizing role as patroness of the arts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Hercules Driving Envy from the Temple of the Muses, 1522-24" by Ugo da Carpi transports us to a world where art and knowledge triumph over vice. In this allegorical scene, Hercules, known for his immense strength, channels his power towards serving these noble pursuits. The composition centers around Apollo, the god of music and poetry, who points towards an archway symbolizing the expulsion of Avarice from the Temple of the Muses. Avarice personified as greed is depicted carrying a hoard of treasure in her arms while being chased out by Hercules. This visual narrative emphasizes that virtuous strength can overcome materialistic desires. Seated beside Apollo is Athena, recognized by her helmet, shield, and spear. As the goddess of wisdom and warfare, she represents both intellect and civilization. Her presence reinforces the idea that art and knowledge are essential elements for societal progress. Rendered in chiaroscuro woodcut technique with black and gray tones by Balthasar Peruzzi after Ugo da Carpi's original work from 16th century Italy; this print showcases their mastery in capturing light and shadow to create depth and drama. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection; it serves as a reminder that through artistic expression we can conquer our vices while embracing wisdom as patrons of creativity.
