'Henry VIII. And Model of the "Great Harry", (1902). We owe the founding of the Royal Navy to Henry VIII. Before his time there seems to have been no standing navy, private ships being hired and armed when a war-fleet was needed. With the accession, however, of Henry VIII. (1509), England began to take her right place as a naval powerr. The new king was rich and clever, bluff and hearty, a thorough "John Bull", with a proud resolute spirit that would brook no denial'. From "King Edward's Realm; Story of the Making of the Empire", by the Rev. C. S. Dawe, B.A. [The Educational Supply Association, Limited, Holborn Viaduct, London, 1902]

Henry VIII and Model of the 'Great Harry' (1902)
EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Stirring Depiction of England's Maritime Beginnings This evocative black-and-white photograph print, created by C. Howard in 1902, captures the essence of a pivotal moment in English history. The image features Henry VIII, the formidable monarch who set the stage for England's emergence as a naval power. Before Henry's reign (1509-1547), England's naval capabilities were limited, with private ships being hired and armed only when war was imminent. However, Henry's accession marked a turning point. With his wealth, intelligence, and unyielding spirit, England began to assert itself on the world's maritime stage. The photograph shows Henry VIII, dressed in regal attire, standing proudly next to a model of the 'Great Harry', one of the most powerful warships of his time. The carrack-type vessel, named 'Grace of God' or 'Henry Grace à Dieu', was the largest warship in the world when it was launched in 1514. It was a symbol of Henry's determination to build a formidable navy. This photograph is an intriguing glimpse into England's maritime past, a time when the country was transforming from a collection of disparate territories into a centralized state with a strong navy. The image is a testament to Henry's vision and the beginning of England's journey towards becoming a major naval power. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich history that underpins the Royal Navy, a history that continues to shape the maritime landscape of the world. The image, created by C. Howard in 1902, is a valuable historical document that offers insights into the origins of England's naval prowess.
