General Electric XT700-GE-700 Turboshaft Engine, ca. 1974

The T700 engine evolved directly from Army experience in the Vietnam Wars difficult operating conditions that created helicopter engine maintenance problems. GE won the 1971 power plant competition for the proposed Utility Tactical Transport System (UTTAS) helicopter, with specifications for a high performance, low fuel consumption, reduced maintenance, and combat damage resistant engine. This is one of the experimental engines used in the UTTAS rotorcraft competition in 1974

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the General Electric XT700-GE-700 Turboshaft Engine, a remarkable piece of technology that emerged from the challenging operating conditions faced by helicopters during the Vietnam War. In response to the maintenance difficulties encountered in these war zones, GE embarked on developing an engine that would address key issues such as high performance, low fuel consumption, reduced maintenance requirements, and combat damage resistance. The image captures one of the experimental engines used in the Utility Tactical Transport System (UTTAS) rotorcraft competition held in 1974. This competition aimed to identify an engine capable of meeting the demanding specifications set forth for military helicopter operations. With its sleek design and advanced materials like aluminum steel, stainless steel, plastic rubber paint inconel, this turbine engine represents a significant advancement in aviation technology during the 20th century. The General Electric Aircraft Engines played a pivotal role in revolutionizing air transport and propelled American aviation to new heights. Displayed at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), this artifact stands as a testament to America's ingenuity and dedication to technological advancements. It serves as a reminder of how scientific institutions like NASM contribute not only to education but also preserve our nation's rich heritage. As we admire this photograph print today, let us appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its historical significance within the context of transportation innovation and wartime engineering achievements.
