EDITORS COMMENTS
The Express Bus, 1900, (1933). This print captures the essence of early 20th century London. In front of Ye Olde Swiss Cottage public house in north London, an open-top horse-drawn bus stands proudly. These express buses were a popular mode of transportation from Swiss Cottage to the Bank, charging only sixpence for any distance traveled. The back of the bus showcases an advertisement for Carters Little Liver Pills, a testament to the advertising practices of that era. Meanwhile, on the left side of the frame, a man diligently paints the pub sign while perched atop a ladder. This image is part of 'The Pageant of the Century' collection published by Odhams Press Ltd in 1933. It offers us a glimpse into Victorian Britain and its bustling streets filled with people going about their daily lives. The double-decker omnibus represents not just a means of transport but also serves as a symbol of progress and innovation in road transportation during this time period. The horses pulling it remind us that animal-powered vehicles were still prevalent before motorized options took over. Overall, this photograph encapsulates both historical significance and everyday life in early 20th century London. It invites us to imagine what it was like to travel through these busy streets on such an iconic mode of transport.
