Edward A. Wilson, B. A. M. B. c1910s, (1913). Artist: Emery Walker
Edward A. Wilson, B.A. M.B. c1910s, (1913). Doctor, painter and naturalist Edward Wilson (1872-1912) died with Scott on the way back from the Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Photo-engraving after a photograph by Dr. E. J. Wilson, from Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Edward A. Wilson, a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on both art and exploration. Born in 1872, Wilson was not only a doctor but also an accomplished painter and naturalist. Tragically, his life was cut short during the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In this image, taken around the early 1910s by photographer Dr. E. J. Wilson, we see Edward A. Wilson standing tall with determination etched across his face. The intensity in his eyes reflects his unwavering commitment to scientific discovery and adventure. The Terra Nova Expedition set sail from London on June 1st, 1910, with Scott's ambition to reach the South Pole at its core. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and more; they embarked on a perilous journey towards uncharted territories. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 - after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies - they were met with crushing disappointment as Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already triumphed over them. Trapped by harsh conditions and facing insurmountable odds against survival itself; Scott along with Dr. Edward Wilson and their companions perished at the end of March that year. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries that recounted their valiant efforts till the very end. This photo-engraving serves as a poignant reminder of these brave souls who sacrificed everything for scientific progress while paying tribute to Edward A. Wilson's multifaceted talents as an artist and adventurer alike.
