Drill-shed in Burlington Gardens, erected by the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Drill-shed in Burlington Gardens, [London], erected by the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, 1862. In our Number for the 18th of January last we gave a picture of fatigue parties of the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (Lord Ranelagh's regiment) levelling the ground in Burlington Gardens preparatory to erecting a drill-shed. We now present to our readers a view of the shed which the South Middlesex have erected. It is of corrugated iron, well built (by Mr. Richardson, Euston-road), and 120ft. long by 50 ft. broad, and 11ft. to the eaves. There are windows in the roof and at the sides which give plenty of light in the day, and at night it is brilliantly lighted with gas, the fittings, for which have been furnished and put up by Mr. Warner, of Fleet-street. This is one of the best-covered drill-sheds in London, and must prove a great boon to the metropolitan companies of Lord Ranelagh's regiment, and, indeed, not only to those companies, but to other corps, for his Lordship offers the drill-shed for the use of other metropolitan corps. The London Irish Volunteers have already availed themselves of this offer'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Drill-shed in Burlington Gardens, London, erected by the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers in 1862. The image captures the essence of a pivotal moment in the history of military training in the heart of the city. The South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, also known as Lord Ranelagh's regiment, are seen here having completed the construction of their new drill-shed. The structure, measuring 120ft. long by 50 ft. broad, and 11ft. to the eaves, was expertly built by Mr. Richardson of Euston-road. Its corrugated iron design provided ample coverage and protection from the elements, making it one of the best-covered drill-sheds in London at the time. The shed boasted windows in the roof and at the sides, allowing for an abundance of natural light during the day. At night, it was brilliantly illuminated with gas, the fittings for which were supplied and installed by Mr. Warner of Fleet-street. This state-of-the-art drill-shed proved to be a significant improvement for the South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and other metropolitan corps, offering them a well-lit and spacious training facility. Lord Ranelagh, in his generosity, extended the use of the drill-shed to other metropolitan corps, including the London Irish Volunteers, who had already taken advantage of this gracious offer. The construction of this drill-shed marked a crucial step forward in the development of military training facilities in London and served as a testament to the dedication and commitment of the volunteers in ensuring they were prepared for any eventuality.
