Dr. Wilson Watching the First Rays of Sunlight Being Recorded, c1911, (1913)

Dr. Wilson Watching the First Rays of Sunlight Being Recorded After the Long Winter Night, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the poignant moment of Dr. Wilson watching the first rays of sunlight being recorded after a long and treacherous winter night in 1911. The image is part of the historical documentation from Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to Antarctica, known as the Terra Nova Expedition. Led by Scott, this British Antarctic Expedition aimed to conduct scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Alongside Dr. Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott reached their ultimate destination on January 17th, 1912. However, their triumph was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies, Scott and his team perished at the end of March. It would take eight months for their bodies and diaries to be found. The photograph symbolizes both hope and despair - capturing a fleeting moment when nature's light pierces through darkness but also representing the ultimate defeat faced by these brave explorers. This image serves as a testament to their unwavering determination in pursuit of knowledge and exploration amidst harsh conditions. Preserved in "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this photograph stands as an enduring reminder of human resilience against adversity during one of history's most challenging expeditions into uncharted territories.
