Disgracing of Albert Dreyfus, 1895
Disgracing of Albert Dreyfus, 1895. Alfred Dreyfus (c1859-1935), French army officer of Jewish extraction, wrongly accused of passing secret documents to the Germans, being disgraced as a traitor and degraded by having his sword broken and all signs of rank removed from his uniform. After being court-martialled and disgraced, Dreyfus was sent to serve a life sentence on Devils Island. Although the legal proceedings were irregular, the verdict was widely approved of in French society and the press, where anti-Semitism was rife. The case, which became known as l Affaire Dreyfus continued to divide France, with the author Emile Zola writing a famous open letter accusing the army of a cover-up. Eventually, in 1906, Dreyfus received a full pardon from the President of France, and he went on to serve with distinction in the French army in the First World War. From Le Petit Journal. (Paris, 13 January 1895)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Disgracing of Albert Dreyfus, 1895: A Symbol of Injustice and Triumph". This powerful print captures a defining moment in history - the disgraceful treatment of Albert Dreyfus, a French army officer wrongly accused of treason. Standing tall in his military uniform, Dreyfus, a man of Jewish descent, endured the ultimate humiliation as his sword was broken and all signs of rank were stripped away. The year was 1895, an era marked by prejudice and religious discrimination. Anti-Semitism ran rampant through French society and the press, leading to widespread approval for Dreyfus' court-martial and subsequent degradation. However, amidst this dark chapter emerged voices like Emile Zola's open letter that accused the army of concealing the truth. Dreyfus' case became known as l'Affaire Dreyfus - a divisive issue that tore France apart. Yet justice prevailed years later when he received a full pardon from the President in 1906. This remarkable turn allowed him to serve with distinction during World War I. In this photograph's vivid colors lies not only an image but also a testament to resilience against injustice. It serves as a reminder that even in times when prejudice clouds judgment, there are individuals who rise above it all. Albert Dreyfus may have been disgraced on that fateful day captured here forever by Ann Ronan Pictures but his story is one of triumph over adversity – proof that determination can conquer even the darkest corners of history.
