The Death of Harold, 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that vividly depicts the tragic demise of King Harold II during the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The artist, Patten Wilson, skillfully brings to life this pivotal moment in history as he colorizes a engraving from Charles Dickens' book "A Child's History of England". In this dramatic scene, we witness the clash between two mighty armies on Senlac Hill. King Harold stands valiantly at the forefront, defending his claim to the throne against William of Normandy's forces. However, fate takes a cruel turn as an arrow finds its mark and strikes Harold directly in the eye. The image captures not only the violence and chaos of battle but also conveys a sense of loss and tragedy. The fallen king lies motionless on the battlefield while his loyal subjects mourn his untimely death. Shields shattered and weapons strewn across the ground serve as poignant reminders of lives lost in this historic conflict. Through Wilson's artistic interpretation, we are transported back to this defining moment in English history - a turning point that would shape future dynasties and forever alter England's destiny. This colorized print serves as both an homage to Charles Dickens' literary work and a visual testament to one man's fight for power amidst war-torn lands.
