Completed M1 Tinsley Viaduct, 1968. Artist: Michael Walters
Completed Tinsley Viaduct on the M1, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1968. The twin cooling towers of the Blackburn Meadows Power Station which many travellers heading north used as a landmark can be seen on the right. Still in operation at the time, they were demolished in 2008. The once great steelworks of Meadowhall can be seen on the left under the bridge. This image was used by the Yorkshire Bank to portray the prosperity of the area at the time and this monument to Sheffields steel industry also marked its decline, as the steelworks headed for recession and eventual closure in the 1980s

Completed M1 Tinsley Viaduct, 1968 - A Monument to Sheffield's Steel Industry and Decline
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the grandeur of the Completed M1 Tinsley Viaduct in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, back in 1968. Standing tall against the skyline, this architectural marvel was a symbol of progress and connectivity for its time. On the right side of the viaduct, two towering landmarks catch our attention - the Blackburn Meadows Power Station's twin cooling towers. These iconic structures served as a guiding beacon for travelers heading north. Sadly, they were demolished in 2008 after decades of operation. To the left under the bridge lies Meadowhall, once a thriving steelworks that represented Sheffield's industrial might. However, this image also marks its decline as it faced recession and eventual closure during the tumultuous 1980s. The Yorkshire Bank recognized this photograph's significance and used it to portray the prosperity of Sheffield at that time. It serves as a testament to both Sheffields' steel industry achievements and its subsequent struggles. Through Michael Walters' lens, we are transported back to an era when England's iron and steel industry dominated these landscapes. This powerful image encapsulates not only an architectural masterpiece but also tells a story about economic shifts that shaped communities across Britain during this period.
