Captain Oates (1880-1912), English Antarctic explorer, 1916

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Titus Oates (1880-1912), English cavalry officer with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and later an Antarctic explorer. Captain Oates (1880-1912) looked after the ponies that were used for sledge hauling during Scotts final expedition, which left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. They reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, famously walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice, not wanting his ill health to compromise his three companions chances of survival. John Player & Sons cigarette card series Polar Exploration, 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Captain Oates, an English Antarctic explorer, in 1916. Lawrence Edward Grace Titus Oates was not only a cavalry officer but also played a crucial role in Scott's final expedition to the South Pole. As part of this expedition, Captain Oates cared for the ponies used for sledge hauling during their treacherous journey. Unfortunately, upon reaching their destination on January 17,1912, they discovered that the Norwegian team led by Amundsen had already beaten them to the pole by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his team tragically perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Captain Oates' story stands out as one of self-sacrifice and bravery amidst dire circumstances. Afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, he made the ultimate decision to walk into a blizzard from his tent so as not to compromise his three remaining companions' chances of survival. This image is part of John Player & Sons cigarette card series titled "Polar Exploration" from 1916. It serves as a poignant reminder of both triumphs and failures within exploration history. The photograph showcases Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Titus Oates dressed in warm clothing suitable for enduring harsh Antarctic conditions—an embodiment of British determination during early 20th-century expeditions.
