Calligraphy, early 19th century. Creator: Tanomura Chikuden (Japanese, 1777-1835)
Calligraphy, early 19th century. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of calligraphy from the early 19th century, created by the talented Tanomura Chikuden. As part of the Nanga movement in Japan, Chikuden and his contemporaries were deeply influenced by Chinese culture, evident in their subjects and artistic styles. The Japanese fascination with imported Chinese objects and knowledge during this period is beautifully reflected in this artwork. The Nanga painters had a tradition of exchanging small paintings and calligraphies among themselves as tokens of friendship. They also commemorated special gatherings by creating individual sheets that would later be compiled into albums. The sheets featured in this photograph are an exquisite example of such a gathering. Executed on silk using ink, Chikuden's mastery shines through every brushstroke captured here. His elegant calligraphy evokes a sense of harmony between form and content, showcasing his deep understanding of both artistry and language. Preserved within the esteemed collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art, these precious album leaves offer us a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of Japan during the Edo period (1615-1868). This particular print has been expertly captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images to ensure its beauty endures for generations to come.
